Effectiveness Calculator

Use the Effectiveness Calculator to see aviation's effectiveness in a particular transportation context, relative to surface transport. The numbers shown are the averages for the travelers interviewed during the field research, and are provided as a reference. The numbers for the people in the scenario you’re considering might be different.

Interpretation

  • Time Saved. The amount of ten-hour days saved by aviation, per person, per 1-way trip.
  • Resources Preserved. The percentage of resources (time, health, energy, safety, and security) wasted by surface transport, but preserved by aviation. To learn how the resources preserved calculations were made, please watch the video on this page.
  • Work Advancement. The extent to which aviation advances people’s work on a scale of 0 to 4.0, with 4.0 being “tremendously better than surface transport.” Work advancement includes the functions of: access, cargo acquisition, facilitation of work, emergency transport, and psychosocial benefit.

Aviation's Effectiveness in the

Transportation Context

A transportation context is a geographic area defined by the predominant mode of surface transport used in that area. The AER evaluated aviation's effectiveness in the five, basic transportation contexts: road, river, ocean, trail, and no-mode. The no-mode context is where no surface transport mode is available (i.e. no roads, navigable rivers, ocean, or trails).

Time Saved Calculator

Use the Time Saved Calculator to estimate how much time aviation would save workers in a geographic ministry area (GMA).

  • First, place the cursor over the question mark icon to see how much time aviation saves in each transportation context, then enter one of those amounts, or different amount.
  • Second, enter the average, optimal number of round trips workers would take each year.
  • Third, enter the number of adult aviation users.

Watch the video on this page to learn how to use the tool, and how to interpret the results.

Strengths Maximization Index (SMI)

Use the SMI Tool to assess the level to which aviation's inherent strengths would be maximized in a geographic ministry area (GMA). The inherent strengths of aviation are saving time and preserving the resources of health, energy, safety, and security. When aviation's strengths are maximized, maximum benefit is received by the workers who use it.

Watch the video on this page to learn how to use the tool, and how to interpret the results.

The index number provided by the tool also gives an indication of whether aviation, surface transport, or a combination would be best to use in a given scenario. The SMI number should be used with the other research findings to frame decisions about aviation use. Doing so will facilitate good stewardship of kingdom assets.

The 24 questions can be answered using estimates from your personal or professional knowledge, or by using the results of a Transportation Needs Assessment (TNA).
